Campaign groups opposing nuclear energy projects from around the UK are calling on whoever becomes the next PM to carry out a Defence Implications Review of Johnson’s major 24 GW new nuclear power station policy. The groups say that the unnecessary new nuclear infrastructure would put the UK at a strategic, if not existential, century-long risk to emerging threats, posed by autocratic regimes, smarter next-generation weapons, cyber, suicidal terrorists and Artificial Intelligence. A review should also consider NATO countries and the wider-world’s currently high dependency on uranium from Russian-sphere regimes and future Chinese ‘Belt and Road’ policies.
